The Agouti Gene (A) is a modifer gene that restricts Eumelanin pigment to the mane, tail, and lower legs. The result of this is that black horses (EE or Ee) that have the A gene become bays. This gene does not affect red (ee) horses, who may carry the gene without showing it physically. Bay horses may range from a light golden brown to a dark brown, almost black body, always with black mane, tail, and legs. More research is being done to discover the genes that control the intensity of the bay color.
