The e gene is recessive, and codes for reddish brown hairs on the body, mane and tail. The mane and tail may be the same color, slightly darker, or lighter than the body. Chestnuts may be modified by the flaxen gene, a dominant gene that makes the mane and tail much lighter than the body.
Only horses that are ee will display red based colors. Chestnut colors may very from light golden brown to red or even a dark liver color. ee is not affected by the Agouti gene, so a chestnut horse can have the A gene and you cannot tell by looking.

Louie is an example of the dark, or liver chestnut color. He also carries the Agouti gene, which means he could produce bay foals.

Doro is a wonderful example of chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail. It is thought that the flaxen mane and tail are caused by a dominant allele that only affects ee horses, but more research is being done.
